Speak the truth. He's a homophobic bigot and the only relief is that he's 78 and will hopefully die before he can do too much damage.

I had a friend from Merseyside who was studying to be ordained. I didn't know he was gay until he told me was HIV+. He died of Aids a few years ago.
Sadly, often the outcome of anti-gay attitudes is an inability to be honest and/or partaking in undercover, often risky relationships.
I'm sorry to hear about your friend, I do hope there will not be many more going the same way.
